約翰．謬爾， 20世紀初期，美國自然保育運動的領袖，也是現代自然保育的先驅。他的作品被稱譽為「感動過一個國家的文字」。他不僅是個自然博物學家，地質學家、探險家，尤其是個哲學家。他相信自然是人的理想型態，更是一種靈媒、一種力量，他說：「成千上萬疲憊的、不安的、虛弱的人，感覺到山上去就像回到家一樣，曠野是人生所必需，國家公園及保留區不僅是森林及河流的泉源，更是生命的泉源」。因此，畢其一生，約翰．謬爾無時無刻不為了推廣其自然哲思與國家公園保育的理念而努力奔走。
《墨西哥灣千哩徒步行》詳實記錄了約翰．謬爾於一八六七年九月一日開始至一八六八年冬天，帶著最簡便的行囊、囊袋中僅有三本書一路伴隨：《柏恩斯詩集》、《新約》、米爾頓的《失樂園》，還有一支植物壓平器，靠著雙腳隻身從肯塔基出發，途經田納西、喬治亞、佛羅里達，走過當時剛經歷過南北戰爭的美國南方，直抵墨西哥灣的旅行見聞與對自然的觀察省思。據謬爾在書中所寫：「我的計畫很簡單，是以我能找出的最荒野、森林最茂密，而又最省腳力的路線向南行，希望能經歷大片原始森林。……」這趟旅程原本要再從古巴往更南方推進的，後來因健康因素，只有改道搭船到加州回返。
在展開這段旅程之前，約翰．謬爾的生活時常處於自我懷疑與猶豫不安的混雜狀態，然而經過千里徒步的洗禮後，尤其是到達終點站加州的內華達山脈時，他達到了身體及心理上的目標。曠野與自然，對於約翰．謬爾而言，有一股無法掌控的力量將他推向原始，如同他在旅行之前寫給好友的信中所傳達的：他對原始及自然的熱愛就像一條深而壯的河流，它那殘忍的浪潮把謬爾生命中的一切東西，包括所謂的「義務」、「責任」、世俗的成功以及傳統的宗教思想，全都一股腦吞滅……

Taken from his earliest journals, this book records Muir’s walk in 1867 from Indiana across Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida to the Gulf Coast. In his distinct and wonderful style, Muir shows us the wilderness, as well as the towns and people, of the South immediately after the Civil War.

作者簡介
約翰．謬爾（John Muir，1838-1914）
一八三八年出生於蘇格蘭登巴鎮。一八四九年十一歲時隨家人移民美國威斯康辛州，後來進入威斯康辛大學修習化學、地質學與植物學。一八六七年後，興趣轉向大自然，尤其在遊歷加州內華達山脈的高山地區，目睹了優詩美地峽谷壯闊的山嶺、挺拔高聳的樹木，以及氣勢磅礡的瀑布、美不勝收的山谷景致後，便更加積極地投身於大自然的深度觀察與記錄。他嚮往曠野的原始，對於大自然的獨特體悟，孕育了他的國家公園保育思潮與理念。
他不僅是個自然博物學家，地質學家、探險家，尤其是個哲學家。他相信自然是人的理想型態，更是一種靈媒、一種力量，他說：「成千上萬疲憊的、不安的、虛弱的人，感覺到山上去就像回到家一樣，曠野是人生所必需，國家公園及保留區不僅是森林及河流的泉源，更是生命的泉源」。
一八七六年，因為謬爾的努力奔走與呼籲，促成美國政府頒布森林保育政策；一八九O年，美國成立第一座、也是全世界第一座國家公園「優勝美地國家公園」。
謬爾足跡遍及美洲，畢其一生共發表三百多篇文章及出版十多本重要著作，主要在闡述其自然哲學及國家公園理念，對全世界的影響頗深遠。著作有：《我們的國家公園》（Our National Parks, 1901）、《夏日走過山間》（My first Summer in the Serra, 1911）、《優勝美地國家公園》（The Yosemite, 1912）、《阿拉斯加之旅》（Travels in Alaska, 1915）、《墨西哥灣千哩徒步行》（A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf,1916），以及《陡峭的小徑》（Steep Trails, 1918）等書。
John Muir (1838-1914) was one of the most influential conservationists and nature writers in American history. He was instrumental in the creation and passage of the National Parks Act, and founder of the Sierra Club, acting as its president until his death. Muir was a spirit so free that all he did to prepare for an expedition was to ”throw some tea and bread into an old sack and jump the back fence.”

Conduction and Radiation is concerned with discussion and problem-solving related to the two principal modes of heat transfer. The text includes special topics such as inverse and microscale heat transfer, phase change, diffusive mass transfer, spectral formulation of the enclosure theory, and a simplified analysis of the radiative tranfer equation. Analytical and numerical treatments of the radiative transfer equation are presented. The goal of the text is to extract developments that have taken place over the past two decades and present them in a self-contained manner. The book provides a convenient link to students between a grossly simplified approach of the first level texts and sophisticated general purpose software packages.
Much of the contents of the book can be covered in a one-semester course that combines both conduction and radiation. The book could be used for individual courses on conduction and radiation with supplementary material provided for numerical methods and measurement techniques.
Apart from students in mechanical engineering, those from applied mechanics, energy technology, and chemical engineering are expected to benefit from its contents.
