內容簡介
Organized by the Department of Classics of the U. of Leiden, The Netherlands, the XIIth International Hippocrates Colloquium was held in August 2005. This volume presents 23 of the 37 papers presented at the colloquium, all of them revised for publication and translated into English, making this an unusually substantial resource on the nature and impact of ancient medical education in Europe, and, by extension, the nature of European medical education up to the pre-modern era. The papers are grouped into themes: doctors and laymen, teachers and pupils, teaching of surgery and obstetrics, and Galen and the Hippocratic tradition, with individual paper topics describing medical education and its proponents from ancient Greece and the Roman Empire to the 18th century. The centrality of Hippocrates in medical education, and the importance of Galen in transmitting his ideas, is delineated in the volume’s introduction, by Jacques Jouanna (emeritus, Greek, U. of Paris-Sorbonne). The contributors are classicists and historians at universities in Europe and the US. Annotation 穢2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) |
