內容簡介
Even today the theories of Charles Darwin cause controversy in some circles. This two-volume work contains papers in which the authors were asked to discuss the reception of Darwin’s ideas throughout Europe from the earliest translations in the 1830s to the middle of the twentieth century. In some countries, such as France and Germany, there was enough discussion to warrant several chapters, tracing the evolution of attitudes. In others, such as Estonia, translations came late and the reaction was based on ethnic identity rather than science and religion. Many in Northern Europe read Darwin in translations made from German editions, thus causing misunderstandings. Catholic countries were less receptive than Protestant ones, but both eventually found a meeting ground with Darwinism. The ways in which Darwin sparked scientific study and experimentation is stressed in several pieces. Equally intriguing are the mutations of his theories by philosophers and political theorists, the "social Darwinism" that became a field of its own. Engels (ethics in the life sciences, University of T羹bingen) and Glick (history, Boston University) have assembled a wide-ranging group of essays that will be of interest to historians of science, of ideas and of the creation of national identities.
